Residencies for Schools

I offer Art Resiencies in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia schools.

I am an Approved Artist on the SC Art Commission's Art Roster  which supports the Arts in Schools throughout the state by providing grant funds for Teaching Artists.

Residencies offered by me focus on Gourd Sculpting, the Peace Tile Project, Assemblage, and Connecting with your Animal Totem.

Parts of my Residencies are flexible and can be crafted to support the teacher's curriculum , such as blending a student's current history studies within the Art form.

I look forward to co-creating a fun and educational experience in the Arts with you. For more information or to talk further, you can email me at jeannefryart@gmail.com

"Re-inventing the Gourd"  Sculpting from Nature

Beginning with a Gourd (from a local gourd farm), Jeanne leads the students through a process of transforming this bit of nature into a figure of Art that can be whimsical and expressive. Using the gourds as a base of the sculpture along with specialty clay and wire armatures in the sculpting process, the students are encouraged to create a figure that is representative of themselves (a self sculpture), or one that correlates with the chosen theme.

Students learn aspects of Gourd Art, 3-D principles, and Visual composition.

[The gourds used in my residencies are grown at a local SC gourd farm. While these gourds are already cleaned, dried, and prepped from the farm, I do teach the students about the processes before they reach us.]

My processes in embellishing the sculptures use found objects and mixed media techniques, and they are considered Folk Art or Outsider Art.  Simple clay sculpting and metal armature techniques are used, making this Residency absolutely need 5 days to complete. Depending on the number of students served, there may be a materials fee.

The Peace Tile Project - A Traveling Mural

I am a member of the Global Peace Tile Project. The creation of Peace Tiles is a global effort to inspire social change - a visual voice of our youth.

Students create works of Art that when combined with others , produce vibrant murals. Each mural focuses on a central theme, chosen by the teacher and I.

The Peace Tile Project integrates well into the classroom and curriculum standards by:

  • learning visual arts collage and composition
  • applying creativity to problem solving locally and globally
  • Team building - intergroup communication and cooperation
  • raise awareness connections across geography and culture
  • Global issues - learn about issues in their global dimensions
  • Self expression - give students a visual voice around a topic

Students create their art on  6x6 wooden tiles using painting and collage techniques. Tiles are later assembled into a Traveling Mural to display at their school. The mural can easily be transported to other locations if desired, such as neighboring schools or facilities.

This is normally a 5 Day Residency - but can sometimes be shortened to a 3 Day Residency.

Assemblage - Shrines

Creating an Assemblage is incredible fun, and allows students to work within many art modalities at the same time - using Found objects, collage, painting, clay, fibers and beads, All can join together to make a fabulous piece. In this Residency we will work on (2) creations:

(1) Creating a Cigar Box Assemblage that can hang on a wall, AND

(2) An Altoid Tin Mini Shrine Assemblage

Each student will need an empty clean cigar box, and an empty clean Altoid tin. Using all of the techniques described above, we will let our imaginations go wild in creating Unique Assemblage Folk Art. Students will be encouraged to bring some small interesting treasures that are meaningful to them - i.e. seashells, gemstones, ticket stubs, junk jewelry, magazines, ribbon....the possibilities are endless.

This Residency allows students to explore Visual Composition, 3-D Art, and Collage Techniques. It is a 5 Day Residency - (5) 45-60 minute sessions.
